Co To Island

One of the most famous islands in the Gulf of Tonkin and a must-visit place in your Halong bay group tours. Cô Tô ( or Co To) Island is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ha Long Bay and the most beautiful islands in the Tonkin Gulf. According to some ancient books, the name of Cô Tô Island originally was "Cau Dau" meaning that many mountains gather in the middle of the sea. Two words "Cau Dau" in Chinese are "Cu Xú", from which the Vietnamese slightly mispronounced to “Co To” nowadays. Co To is located in the east of Van Don Island, Quang Ninh Province. With an area of 47.3 square km, there are more than 4,985 inhabitants there.

The Co To famous island cluster has more than 50 islands with large and small rocks and absolutely amazing turquoise water surrounded by the poetic natural scenery with large foliage. Hence this is considered the ideal resort for your Vietnam tours during summer vacation. In particular, this place is also known as the one and only venue where Uncle Ho agreed to set up his statue when visiting the island in 1961. Some must-visit places when it comes to Co To include Hong Van beach, Van Chay wharf and “baby” Co To island. Van Chay Wharf is famous for its charming and pristine beauty. This is a shallow water port with the gentle coastline, many small beach rocks, and long routes stretching to the sea.
Hong Vien Sea – Ha Long Bay (Source: Internet)
Hong Vien Sea is known as the most beautiful and cleanest beach in Co To, with tranquil sea waves all year round thanks to Thanh Lan Island, which surrounds the place (about 5km away from town center). Of course, it is a huge mistake without mentioning “Baby Co To Island” with very few inhabitants and two very clean beaches suitable for picnics or outdoor barbecue. Besides, watching the dawn on Co To Island will surely be a perfect experience to start your journey. A small note is that before the end of the trip that you should visit Co To market in the wee hours to buy acclaimed fresh squids for your beloved ones at home.
Sung Sot Cave

Sung Sot Cave is located in the heart of the World Heritage Ha Long Bay. This is one of the most beautiful caves of Ha Long Bay with many unique rock formations found nowhere else in the world. Traversing through the route under the huge foliage of the forest, visitants would feel as if they are heading to the sky. What a scintillating experience to try! Important: you should heed the advice of Vietnam tour operator to have a safe trip here!
The cave is divided into two main “chambers” in which the first one is as large as a giant opera house. The high ceiling is covered with a layer "velvet carpet" decorated by countless "festoons" (glittering stalactites) along with umpteen statues in shape of elephants, seals, cherries or flowers. All those hallucinated things make us wonder “Is this real life or dream?” Better still, we continue to discover the second compartment through a small path. A brand new scene pops up and we realize that this mighty “chamber” can accommodate thousands of people.
The farther you go, the more fascinating things appear along the way such as huge lush trees or sea seals. Accessing the top of the cave, suddenly we bump into a "paradise garden" displaying a clear water lagoon and completely odd yet eye-catching plants and colorful birds. Monkeys often pulled together here to fetch fruit and stir up the quiet atmosphere of the whole region. The cave is located in the tourist center of Ha Long Bay (Ti Top beach – Bo Nau cave – Me Cung cave – Luon cave – Sung Sot cave) and was named "Grotte des surprises" by the French (Cave of Shocks) – absolutely deserves a top-notch spot on your Halong bay group tours list.
There are huge stone blocks near the door rising from the ground up to the ceiling. This is one of the typical karst caves, with high scientific value. Right next to the entrance stands a horse-shaped stalactite with a long sword. Legend has it that, after having defeated the enemy, Giong helped the locals here chase evil spirits and then flew to heaven, leaving the sword and precious horse to guard the village… Some “relics” are still present nowadays which resemble that mighty fight of the beloved hero. Come and see in your Halong bay cruise with naked eyes, guys!
